NEDERLAND – Nederland High School Sensational Seventies Decade Reunion is over a month away, but organizers want alumni to know it’s going to be one giant party with multiple ways to participate.
“I’m one of those people who likes a carnival-like atmosphere,” said Keith Gebauer, an organizer and graduate of the Class of ’73. and extroverts. We want it to stay that way. In a sense, we want to party.
The Sensational Seventies Decade group organizes a meeting every three years. The last one, he said, had a game of poker and games.
“We tried to make sure everyone sees everyone and not just a random ‘hey,'” Gebauer said.
This year’s meeting is scheduled for 5-10:30 p.m. on October 22 at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center. Cost is $40 per person, with pre-registration by October 1. Cost at the door is $45 per person.
Due to recent supply issues, catering will not be offered at the meeting, but there will be food trucks on site, some of which include Taco Rey, Boss Burger, LBS BBQ and The Avenue.
The event is BYOB and setups will be included. Coolers are permitted and organizers will provide ice to revelers.
For registration, make checks payable to NHS Sensational Seventies. Include school year, contact information and maiden name with payment.
Gebauer said he was aware that some people in that age group might be on fixed incomes and that discounts will be offered to those who are struggling.
The meeting will include a golf tournament at Babe Zaharias Golf Course with an 8 a.m. tee time on October 22.
There will be a display of vintage cars and motorcycles and a fun run from the Nederland Heritage Festival parking lot on Boston Avenue, Nederland, at 9:30 a.m., then lunch at noon, then a ride to the civic center parking lot.
Activities at the reunion range from line dancing to photos and more.
The last time there was a 70s reunion, over 600 people showed up. This time, Gebauer expects 1,000.
And it’s not just for graduates from 1970 to 1979; the event is open to those who graduated four years before and four years after.
Marsha Morgan is a 1977 grad involved in the planning who is also thrilled with the reunion. She compared it to a big block party.
There will be no specific theme for the event, although each class decorates a table.
She said her senior year was one of the best and saddest memories.
“Because we were all growing up. We didn’t have as many cliques as when we first started and we knew this might be the last time we’d see some of the people we were graduating with,” Morgan said. “Being with people and talking and just enjoying their company. Not trying to fit in – then you start being yourself, that was the best, for me.
Morgan said they were small town people and you realize everyone was the same.
Gebauer explained that they have a planning committee of 30 people of which six are normally involved.
Gebauer didn’t mention a dress code for the party but said that since the reunion is about a week away from Halloween, they will be holding a costume contest.
“Nobody can recognize anybody anyway. You put on a mask and you can’t recognize anyone,” he said with a laugh.
