Puducherry CM presents a pre-tax budget of Rs 10,696.61 crore: check out the key announcements here

Pondicherry CM N Rangasamy presented a tax-free budget of Rs 10,696.61 crore for the financial year 2022-23 on Monday. The budget contained many key announcements, including free home site pattas for freedom fighters in Union Territory and free laptops for students in grades XI and XII in public and aided schools.

Here are the main budget announcements:

Free houses for freedom fighters

The CM of Pondicherry, during the presentation of the budget to the Territorial Assembly, said that to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the nation’s independence, the administration has decided to provide free homemade pattas to 260 tyagis (combatants of freedom).

Free laptops and bicycles for students

“Laptops would be distributed free of charge to students in grades XI and XII in public schools and government-subsidized schools in a phased manner,” the CM said.

He said it was also proposed to re-implement the free bike scheme for students studying in Standard IX in public and government-subsidised schools.

Creation of the National University of Law in Pondicherry

CM Rangasamy announced that a national university of law would be established in the territory of the Union. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked to lay the foundations for the university and the necessary site had already been earmarked for the project.

Grant of Rs 2 crore to each MP for local development

Under the MLA Local Area Development Scheme, a grant of Rs 2 crore to each member of the Assembly to undertake basic infrastructure works in the current financial year has been enthusiastically welcomed by lawmakers.

Ferry between Karaikal and Sri Lanka

The Chief Minister has announced that steps are being taken to start a ferry service between Karaikal Port and Kankesanthuri Port in Sri Lanka this year.

Fill government vacancies

All lower and upper division clerk positions and all government service vacancies would be filled before the end of the current year.
