Problem gamers can opt out of new online gaming options – NBC Connecticut

Online gaming and sports betting is only two weeks away and while this is exciting for some, for others like problem gamblers it creates a sense of dread. This is why the State is deploying new problem gambling tools.

“On October 7, everyone will have a casino in their house,” said Diana Goode, executive director of the CT Council on Problem Gambling.

It is then that the State Lottery and the two tribal casinos will launch their online gaming and sports betting applications.

“We can confidently predict that the rate of gambling addiction will increase in this state,” said Declan Hill, associate professor at New Haven University.

Hill said it was like being an alcoholic and “not having to go to a bar, not having to buy a drink, but having it on your body all the time.” It is a massive, massive temptation.

That’s why the state is allowing problem gamers to exclude themselves from marketing and one of these new apps through a new website: ct.gov/selfexclusion.

“It is a way for people who have a problem or realize that they are likely to have a problem to get on this list and avoid the temptation from the start,” the commissioner said. consumer protection, Michelle Seagull.

The information a player enters on the self-exclusion website is shared with tribes and vendors who need this information to keep problem gamblers away from their site.

“You’re going to have to give out a lot of information. We are asking for social security, we have to verify that it is you, ”Seagull said.

Goode said it was a good first step.

“Our concern is that there is no single purchase package in Connecticut for self-exclusion,” she said.

A player must always visit both casinos to exclude themselves from the game in person.

“We would like to see a comprehensive way for people to self-exclude from everything, not just online,” she added.

“The idea that people are going to self-exclude underestimates the power of addiction,” said Senator Tony Hwang, R-Fairfield.

Hwang said more needs to be done to prevent problem gambling.

“The problem with addiction is you don’t think you have a problem. You think you will be the next winner, ”he said.

“Are the casinos, the sportsbook manufacturers going to expressly exclude people they may recognize as problem gamblers?” Hill said.

Seagull said they can self-exclude for a year, five years, or a lifetime.

“If you set your limit at five years, you won’t be able to retire four years later. You have to wait at least those five years, ”Seagull said.

The apps will come with other security measures.

“Every time you log in or out, you should get information on how to get help with gambling issues, self-exclusion or limits on yourself,” Seagull said.
