KOCHI: The first years after children enter the world of knowledge form the foundation upon which their whole future is built. Bearing this in mind, Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK), in association with the state government, is implementing a project to create model pre-primary schools with activity zones.

“Kindergartens should encourage children to learn through interactive play lessons and provide them with a variety of hands-on learning activities,” said Amul Roy, state program manager at SSK. He said young children learn best when they actively learn and experiment with their environment.

“The preschool environment should encourage children to explore using all of their senses and to develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, perseverance and imagination”, he said. -he declares.

This is where the concept of areas of activity comes in, comprising interactive material and activities focused on a particular skill, area of development or interest. Roy said preschool classes often use activity zones to encourage learning and exploration at their own pace.

According to the concept, a classroom is divided into several activity zones. They are named block zone, dramatic play zone, literary zone, art zone, sensory table zone, manipulation or discovery zone, gross motor skills indoor play zone, music and movement zone, computer zone, outdoor area and nature or science area.

Roy said the project is being implemented statewide. “However, the number of preschools affiliated with the state education department is lower, around 2,000,” he said.

He specified that the work related to the establishment of the activity zones would have been completed this year without the Covid pandemic. “The project was implemented in 14 schools under SSK and in 168 schools under Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Outcomes for States (STARS),” he said.

Schools received Rs 15 lakh each to implement the project. The respective local self-government institutions would provide additional funds. “The works in the Thiruvananthapuram schools are proceeding according to schedule. A good example of an activity zone can be seen in a school in Thrissur. The classroom will be open there by the end of the month, ”said Roy.
