Andaman Begins Registration of Migrant Workers to Keep UT Safe

Port Blair, April 27 (UNI) For the safety and security of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Andaman Department of Labor has started registering all migrant workers arriving in the Union Territory (UT). In this context, a departmental helpdesk has been set up at the international airport and ports of Veer Savarkar to check workers arriving in the islands. With the start of the process, over 150 workers were verified and registered in three days. The entire process is conducted by the Department of Labor in conjunction with the DC office and the police department. The A&N islands are experiencing huge development projects and sufficient local labor is not available on the islands. In such a situation, manpower has to come from the rest of India to take over the development work. To secure the islands while obtaining workers, it is important to register and verify each worker and tenant. Islanders are urged to exercise caution when engaging unverified tenants or workers in their residences or establishment. This is very important for the future of the islands, which are going to be the growth center of Southeast Asia. In this regard, the first verification and registration exercise was launched on April 23, 2022, after the A&N Chief Secretary of Administration noted that the 1999 village register system had fallen into complete disuse. “The goal is not to restrict foreigners, but the goal is to regulate them, reorganize them, reorient them and at the same time the workers should be given various benefits under the labor laws. The benefits of enrollment and skills development will be refined through continuing education and extended to the Department’s welfare programs,” Andaman administration sources said. In the meantime, the administration has warned major employers/contractors, whether civilian or defense, to act responsibly and monitor every worker. “We see that since 2004, people before the elections go through contractors and after the completion of the works, these workers are laid off and the workers remain in search of other jobs. These workers have Aadhaar and other identity proofs from various parts of Bengal and this being a serious problem, all the islanders must cooperate, coordinate to check every worker and every tenant, which is mandatory and not a choice,” added the source.
